“Come up here, my sweet ladies, and let me help you free yourselves from that hex.”

This was none other than Char Goodman, the priestess mentioned and shown in the flyer Emmie had taken.

Char extended a hand, beckoned, and stared at them without blinking. “What are you waiting for?”

Emmie stiffened and smiled nervously within the flood of attention from the upturned faces. “What hex?”

“Oh, I can see it around you. I think you know what I mean.” She pointed to the steps leading down to the circular stage. “Both of you, step down here and let me heal your spirits. You cannot have a hex on you at a time such as this.”

“How do you feel about her?” Emmie whispered to Sarah.

“I… think she’s okay. Let’s do it.”

Emmie and Sarah walked down the carpeted steps to the stage. A heavyset woman was kneeling on the outside edge of a large circle made from a line of sand. She had gone back to her task, leaning into the circle, shifting around sand, candles, and cowrie shells as if trying to decide a place for each item. She was making patterns. There were also rattles and beads near her.

Char stepped over to Sarah. “It’s a good thing I found you.”

“We found you.” Sarah had a puzzled look.

The priestess laughed. “Not true. The gods brought you here, and it’s a good thing. You might not have survived two nights.”

The Lunar Stillness? Today was the fourth, so it would take place two nights from now. Finn’s interpretation of the symbols someone had painted on her doorway came back to her. Death.

Looking at Sarah, Char gestured toward the circle. “Step into the center. The hex has weakened you the most. Mimi, help her.”

The kneeling woman, Mimi, broke her focus on the circle to guide Sarah into its center. “Please make yourself comfortable.”

“What are you going to do?” Emmie asked Char.

“Just what I said I would—heal your spirits. The shadow of the hex has consumed your light.”

Emmie noticed the white scarf draped around Char’s shoulders and remembered reading that a priestess of voodoo would often wear a head covering during ceremonies so as not to be distracted by spirits. Char was covering her head now, and Emmie prepared herself to see spirits, but none appeared.

Char directed Emmie to sit in another small circle within the circle that Mimi was creating, just like Sarah’s. She obeyed.

Mimi shifted the sand around with her hands and moved the shells and candles so they formed another layer of patterns inside the larger symbol. It wasn’t a pentagram or another occult symbol, but it looked intricate. Emmie had seen such complex patterns, almost like lace, when leafing through Betty’s voodoo books. She just didn’t know what this one meant.

Lighting the candles one by one, Mimi recited something under her breath after each flame burned steadily. Once they were all lit, she sat upright and clasped her hands together with her eyes closed. The air was still.

Char looked at Sarah. “Take a deep breath, my child.
